Defeats against direct competitors, falling to the penultimate place: the 0:1 in Sandhausen was followed by a 0:2 against Eintracht Braunschweig at 1. FC Magdeburg. Particularly worrying: In neither of the two possibly trend-setting duels in the 2nd Bundesliga did the FCM manage to raise their own offensive game. Simple counterattacks by the opponent were enough for the knockout: Against Braunschweig through an own goal by captain Amara Condé (51st minute) and a goal by Bryan Henning (90 5th).
Defensively, Christian Titz went for more speed against Eintracht and massively rebuilt the midfield. Libya international Daniel Elfadli started for Condé. “In the first half we had a player in Elfadli on the six who took Immanuel Pherai out in his transition moments, but also overall for the opponent,” praised coach Christian Titz.
However, this solution only lasted for half time, after which the 25-year-old had to pass. “I received a blow on the temple in the 35th minute and then my right eye was blurred. So the coaches said we shouldn’t take any risks and I stayed out to be on the safe side,” explained Elfadli.
With Condé coming on, the regular midfield was back on the field, but the stability that Magdeburg had shown before the break was missing. Cristiano Piccini (48′) made a save on the line, but on the next counterattack Condé of all people deflected the ball into the goal.
“We had a clear division after the break, but we didn’t play that at the start and even when we conceded, the six rushed out, was overplayed and then we shot the ball in ourselves,” Titz analyzed the goal, visibly annoyed. “We gave up our position in midfield three times and this resulted in dangerous counterattacks for our opponents,” added the 51-year-old.
The league seems to have found the recipe against 1. FC Magdeburg. It is enough to be defensively compact and at some point to set a counterattack, because the Elbestadt are currently not in a position to hit back. With Hamburger SV, however, FCM has an opponent in front of their chests who can hardly afford to attack a team from the bottom of the table in a defensive 5-4-1 in front of their own fans. There may be some hope for the FCM when Christian Titz returns to his old place of work next Sunday.
