Professor Luhmann, it’s Christmas. For many, the time to get together with parents and in-laws, brothers and sisters-in-law. But some people now feel particularly strongly that they are being left out. Is Christmas the worst time for the lonely? We suspect so. There is no scientific data on this, but it is very plausible. At Christmas, it’s simply the norm to surround yourself with people who are close to you. And it is precisely then that others particularly notice that these people do not exist in their lives.
