Iran’s judiciary chief Gholam-Hussein Mohseni-Edschehi has threatened penalties for women who ignore the mandatory headscarf in public. Taking off the hijab amounts to a hostile attitude towards the Iranian system and its values, he said, according to a report by the Fars news agency.
In addition, not wearing the headscarf violates public morals and violates Sharia and the laws of the country. These violations are supported by Iran’s enemies.
More and more women are bypassing dress codes
After the protests in autumn 2022 against the Islamic system of rule, more and more women are demonstratively ignoring the dress code. In many cities, the authorities are now turning a blind eye. At the same time, violations of the headscarf requirement are tracked by video surveillance.
The uprisings in the fall plunged the political leadership into one of the worst crises in decades. The trigger was the death of the Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in mid-September. She died in police custody after being arrested for breaking Islamic dress codes.
