According to a newspaper report, Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) wants to massively downsize the management area of ????his ministry. Around 160 of the almost 370 jobs there are to be cut, as the “Bild” newspaper reported on Wednesday. According to the report, for example, the “Organization and Auditing” staff and the “Strategic Armament Control” staff will be removed from the management. The area of ????the general inspector will be greatly reduced, writes the “Bild” newspaper.
According to the newspaper, the offices of the state secretaries are also to be reduced – from just under 20 employees to five or six. According to the report, department heads in the ministry should be given more responsibility.
According to the “Bild” newspaper, the conversion should already take place on May 15th. A department head meeting is scheduled for April 18, and two days later the reform is to be announced at an extraordinary staff meeting. Another reform step that affects the rest of the ministry is to follow in the fall. According to the newspaper, a total of ten to 20 percent of staff is to be cut.
In addition, the military department is being rebuilt. There new planners for the infrastructure of the armed forces are used. According to information from the German Press Agency, Roland Börger, an expert from the ministry, will head the Federal Office for Infrastructure, Environmental Protection and Services of the Bundeswehr (BAIUDBw). The new president of the Bonn federal authority recently made a name for itself with plans for the Büchel air base in Rhineland-Palatinate, where the Air Force’s F-35 stealth jets are to be stationed in the future and conversion work is underway.
The new head of department for infrastructure, environmental protection and services (IUD) in the Ministry of Defense will be Alexander Götz from Lower Saxony, an expert on cooperation in civil protection.
SPD politician Pistorius took office as Federal Minister of Defense in January, replacing Christine Lambrecht (SPD), who had announced her resignation after only 13 months in office – after massive criticism of her leadership and a rapid loss of public esteem.
Pistorius had announced that he would make a number of personnel decisions. He has already appointed a new inspector general, replaced a state secretary and appointed a new president of the procurement authority BAAINBw. It is still expected that there could be a planning staff in the ministry itself, which was abolished in 2012. Since 1968 the Ministry had such a staff for the development and analysis of central military-strategic goals. The ministry did not want to comment on reports on further possible personnel decisions on Wednesday.
