Despite the poor performance of the national soccer team last year, Thomas Müller believes in the title at the home European Championship.
“We can do it, yes. I remain self-confident,” said the offensive star of FC Bayern Munich to the magazine “Sport-Bild”, but also admitted: “Nevertheless, everyone involved in “Football Germany” and especially us players have to play a part come down from our high horse.”
It must be clear to everyone that this cannot be done in passing. “We have lost the sense that we have to push the limits at every moment on the field. Even as Germany, even with our technically gifted players,” said the 34-year-old. Müller doesn’t want to dream of a summer fairy tale like 2006. It would be a good idea not to wallow in the past and hope for fairy tales. A realistic look at strengths and weaknesses is needed.
With a view to the Champions League, Müller sees FC Bayern’s potential to win the title. “Of course we are doing quite well at the moment, but we still need to get a few more horsepower to win the Champions League title,” emphasized the 2014 world champion. There are already a few other candidates. “To be honest, after the triumph in 2020, I already thought: We can’t be stopped for the next two or three years. At least so that we’re knocking on the doorstep every year. It felt like this: Who’s going to take us with that? “Stop the team from doing that? Unfortunately, that hasn’t been confirmed.”
