In Saxony-Anhalt, fewer applications have recently been made for financial support for fertility treatments. In 2023, 445 applications were submitted and 360 were approved, the state administration office in Halle said when asked. In the previous year, 2022, 455 of 529 applications received were approved. Figures from 2019 to 2022 show that in well over half of the cases the funding related to the first attempt at fertility treatment, in around a quarter to the second and in 10 to 17 percent to the third attempt to get pregnant with the support of reproductive medicine to become.
In line with the drop in the number of applications, less money has been paid out. According to the state administration office, in 2023 it was almost 236,000 euros, of which the state contributed around 131,500 euros and the federal government 104,400 euros. The amount has been falling steadily since 2019; at that time, over 298,000 euros were paid out. For 2024, 392,000 euros are planned to support fertility treatments.
According to the information, the maximum funding in individual cases is between 800 and 1,800 euros, depending on the method and family constellation. The amount also depends on the costs of the treatment and whether the health insurance company also contributes to the costs.
The figures also show that mostly married couples benefited from the support. According to the information, in 2022 there were 285 married couples and 46 non-marriage couples. Same-sex couples are not eligible for funding.
The number of births overall is declining in Saxony-Anhalt. According to an estimate by the State Statistical Office, around 13,500 children were born in 2023. That would be almost 1,000 fewer than in the previous year and therefore a decrease of seven percent. This is likely to be a low that is even lower than the previous lows of 1993 (14,610), 1994 (14,280) and 1995 (14,568 live births). The final birth figures are due to be published in May.
