Life hadn’t been kind to Geraldine Gimblet lately. Her daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer and since public health care is anything but a matter of course in the USA, the family had to pay for the treatment. The 74-year-old had to invest almost her entire savings in it.
But then the fate of the woman from the US state of Florida and her family turned for the better: her daughter Lawrencina Jackson was able to complete the treatment and has a good chance of becoming completely healthy again. Just a day later, Gimblet received another piece of extremely good news. She won $2 million in the lottery.
A scratch card for ten dollars brought her the big prize. When she found out about her happiness, she could hardly believe it at first, she said on the show “Good Morning America”. “I’ve been playing scratch cards for a very long time. I have one in my pocket every day,” said the American.
On the day she bought the lucky ticket, however, she almost got nothing. The employee at the gas station had actually told her that the tickets were already sold out, she asked him to look again – and actually got the last one. Her patience and perseverance were rewarded.
And at exactly the right time, because her daughter’s therapy had devoured large amounts of money. “My mother went to her life savings when I was ill. I’m so happy for her,” Lawrencina Jackson is quoted as saying in the Florida Lottery press release. Mother and daughter picked up the check together – accompanied by the granddaughter. Geraldine Gimblet opted for a one-shot payment and collected $1.6 million.
