Several climate studies have recently shown that it could get hot again this year. The next temperature record may be awaiting us. This is not only due to climate change, but to a natural climate phenomenon: El Niño. The circulation anomaly in the Pacific off the west coast of Latin America occurs together with the tropical trade winds and ensures a local but also global warm phase. El Niños alternate with the cold phase La Niña.
Josef Ludescher, climate researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, explains in an interview with the star whether it will be even hotter this year than in 2022 and what that means for the 1.5 degree climate target.
