In northern Spain, the military has been mobilized to bring hundreds of travelers to safety in the face of a violent winter storm. Around 500 vehicles, including many long-distance trucks, were stuck in a kilometer-long traffic jam on the N-122 highway between the towns of Sória and Ágreda due to heavy snowfall and bitter cold, as seen on television. Temperatures at higher altitudes in the autonomous community of Castile and León could drop further below minus ten degrees at night, the state TV broadcaster RTVE reported.

In the city of Zaragoza, a little further southeast, the airport had to be temporarily closed due to snow on the runway. In other regions of Spain, traffic was also disrupted by snow and ice or, as in the autonomous community of Extremadura in the southwest of the country, by heavy rain. Rainfall is expected to ease over the course of the night.
