The number of social housing in Baden-Württemberg also increased slightly in 2023. After a low in 2021, the responsible housing ministry counted 53,600 social housing units at the end of last year. “The turnaround we have initiated is definitely continuing, which is very encouraging,” said Construction Minister Nicole Razavi (CDU) to the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and the “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” (Saturday).

Last year, with the help of housing subsidies, 2,602 new social housing units were created for people with a residence permit. That is around 20 percent more than in the previous year (2167) and almost twice as many as in 2019 (1334). Not all of them were newly built; state funding is also available for existing apartments. The prerequisite for the funding is that the builders agree to pay a discount on the local comparative rent for a certain period of time.

The state has expanded its housing support programs to around 500 million euros in recent years. Last year, the money was used to provide funding for the construction of a total of 2,568 social housing units. In addition, 784 households received reduced-interest loans to finance condominiums or houses. The Ministry of Construction increased its funding pot by around 60 million euros last year because demand already exceeded the available funding amount in May.

In 2024, 551 million euros are earmarked for housing funding and the “Young Living” program, which, for example, supports student dormitories. In 2023 the total amount was 525 million euros.
