Cold, colder, Germany. At least that’s how it feels for many people these days. At the start of 2024, many parts of the country were surprised by an onset of winter that was second to none. While some are happy about the white splendor of winter, others can happily do without excessive snow and frost. And that’s no wonder, with temperatures sometimes falling to minus 15 degrees Celsius at night and freezing temperatures during the day. But how long will winter last?
According to meteorologist Dominik Jung, those who are longing for an early start to spring still need a little patience. The weather expert writes on the “wetter.net” platform that there are still a few real winter days ahead before we can expect milder temperatures. Specifically, this means that there can still be frosty nights of up to minus 20 degrees, especially on weekends.
According to the German Weather Service (DWD), we are likely to notice a trend reversal in some places in Germany this weekend – away from frost and towards storms. Strong squalls can be expected, especially on the coast. In central and southern Germany, however, permanent frost is expected. However, Jung predicts that the storm will spread further south by Wednesday, with temperatures between 5 and 14 degrees Celsius over the course of the week. So it will definitely be a little warmer in the next few days, but chilblains will only be able to breathe briefly.
Weather experts are expecting wintry weather conditions again towards the end of the month. According to Jung, the reason for this is the influence of high pressure, which is bringing the cold temperatures back to us. If you don’t live in the mountains, you can still safely leave the sleigh at home. Fresh snow is not expected at the moment, on the contrary: the end of the month is forecast to be predominantly precipitation-free.
According to the 42-day weather forecast from wetter.de, things look similar for February: it will be cold and dry in Germany. At the beginning of the month we reached low temperatures of minus 8 degrees Celsius in parts of the country, especially in the south it remained cold until the last third of February. But it won’t be really warm – the experts expect temperatures between minus 2 and 12 degrees Celsius. The snow is gradually disappearing, but the frosty temperatures will remain with us for now.
