US scientists expect a flood of up to a trillion cicadas in the Midwest and southeast of the United States in late spring. Two populations called “Brood XIII” and “Brood “USA Today” cited researchers who even expect it to occur in 19 states.
Both populations therefore spend most of their lives sleeping underground. “Brut XIII” only appears on the surface every 17 years, especially in the north of the USA, while “Brut According to USA Today, the strongest occurrence of both is expected from mid-May to the end of June.
A few days after hatching, male cicadas begin making rattling noises of up to 90 decibels to mark their territory and attract mating. The large numbers of insects make noise levels similar to those of a plane taking off possible, writes the New York Times.
The scientists said that the cicadas are not directly dangerous for people or animals. Instead, they serve as a food source for birds and are good fertilizer after their death.
