British Prince Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson (64), has received another cancer diagnosis. After the Duchess of York was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer in the summer, skin cancer has now been diagnosed, her spokesman told the British news agency PA and other media.
Her dermatologist had several moles removed and examined when she underwent reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy (removal of breast tissue). “And one of them was identified as cancerous,” the statement said.
She is undergoing further tests to ensure that the disease has been detected at an early stage. “Of course, another diagnosis so soon after treatment for breast cancer is devastating, but the Duchess remains in good spirits.”
Several cases of illness among the royals
Within a few days it is the third news of an illness among the royals. Last week it became known that Princess Kate would be out for a longer period of time due to abdominal surgery. King Charles III is to be treated in hospital for an enlarged prostate.
Ferguson was previously married to Charles’ brother Andrew. At Christmas she was unexpectedly present at the royal family’s joint service at the Sandringham country estate in eastern England.
She wanted to thank the entire medical team, especially her dermatologist, whose vigilance ensured that the disease was detected, said the statement, quoted by PA and other media. She believes her experience highlights the importance of checking for size, shape, color and texture, as well as the appearance of new moles.
