The day started stormy in parts of Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) pointed out during the night that extreme hurricane gusts could be expected on the Brocken in the Harz until the afternoon. Above 1000 meters altitude, gusts with wind speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour are expected.
It is also expected to be windy on Monday on the North Sea and in the higher mountains as well as in the west, especially on the open North Sea and the North Frisian Islands. Snowdrifts are expected to occur in the Harz Mountains and the mountains of Saxony. In the Göttingen district, cars broke down and roads were closed for the same reason.
It will be frosty south of the Alb and in large parts of Bavaria at zero to minus five degrees until the morning, south of the Danube and in the Bavarian Forest even down to minus ten degrees. According to the DWD, it will only be permanently frosty for a long time during the day in a few regions of eastern and southeastern Bavaria, and locally in the very southeast even until the evening. In Bavaria and in the low mountain ranges there can also be slippery conditions in some areas.
The DWD said that rainfall is expected in some areas. Otherwise there is already a thaw in parts of the low mountain ranges. Milder temperatures are also expected in other parts of Germany, with maximums between six and twelve degrees. The gusts of wind are expected to subside during the night.
