Breakthrough of the sad kind in the search for the “Titan” submersible missing in the North Atlantic: According to the US Coast Guard, on Thursday afternoon (CEST) the rescue teams discovered debris from the underwater vehicle on the seabed in the vicinity of the “Titanic” wreck. According to the information, it imploded and the five occupants are dead.
At 9 p.m. (CEST) representatives of the Coast Guard in Boston commented on the recent events. At the press conference, the coordinator of the rescue and search mission, Jamie Frederick, and the regional chief of the Coast Guard, John Mauger, were to provide information to the world public.
The hope of finding survivors on board the “Titan” had recently declined, despite the discovery of the debris. It was suspected that the oxygen reserves on board the vehicle would run out this Thursday. For the search teams, the past few days have been a race against time, which has been pursued with immense effort.
Contact with the submersible “Titan” was lost on Sunday (local time) during an expedition to the wreck of the “RMS Titanic” that sank in 1912 at a depth of around 3800 meters in the North Atlantic. Most recently, two unmanned and remote-controlled underwater vehicles from the Canadian ship “Horizon Arctic” and the French “L’Atatalante” were lowered into the depths of the Atlantic, one of which has now encountered the wreckage, according to the Coast Guard.
