The Edmonton Oilers around German ice hockey star Leon Draisaitl are still unstoppable in the NHL. The team from Canada beat the Nashville Predators 4:1 (1:0, 1:0, 2:1) and achieved their 16th win in a row. This means that the Oilers only need to win one game in the North American Ice Hockey League to equal the record set by the Pittsburgh Penguins from the 1992/93 season. The Columbus Blue Jackets also won 16 games in a row in the 2016/17 season.
During this successful run, Draisaitl was involved in at least three goals for the fourth time: the 28-year-old attacker prepared the opening goal in the first third, scored himself in the middle of the second half to make it 2-0 and was also in the 4-1 decision for just under three minutes involved with a template before the end.
“This is something special. You need great performances and some good games to reach this number,” says Draisaitl about his team’s winning streak. “We were a bit sloppy in the last three games, but strong individual performances brought us the victories.”
Edmonton now faces the Knights
Whether the Oilers will equal the Penguins’ NHL record will only become clear after the All-Star break next weekend: Then Edmonton will face the reigning champions Vegas Golden Knights on February 6th.
JJ Peterka won the duel between two German World Cup silver medalists with Nico Sturm: With the Buffalo Sabers, Peterka won 5:2 (2:2, 1:0, 2:0) at the San Jose Sharks. The 22-year-old attacker scored 2-1 in the first period and 4-2 in the final period, meaning Peterka scored his second brace in a row.
Moritz Seider and the Detroit Red Wings achieved a surprise win 5:2 (3:2, 0:0, 2:0) against the defending champion Vegas Golden Knights. In a high-scoring first third, Seider contributed two assists to Detroit’s 2-0 and 3-2 leads.
Tim Stützle lost with the Ottawa Senators 2:7 (1:0, 1:5, 0:2) against the New York Rangers. Lukas Reichel and the Chicago Blackhawks had to admit defeat 0-1 (0-0, 0-1, 0-0) at the Calgary Flames.
