Police shot an escaped emu in northern Thuringia. The twelve-year-old Australian ratite escaped from its enclosure in Schlotheim on Friday, as the police in Nordhausen reported on Sunday.

The following day, an attentive road user reported the animal next to the L 2096 road between Schlotheim and Hohenbergen. All attempts to capture the animal were unsuccessful. Even the owner who came to the scene couldn’t control Nando.

Because the large bird probably felt threatened by the fire department and police forces, it reportedly became more and more aggressive. After a wild chase across a field, the emu suddenly turned around and ran towards the emergency scabies.

In order to prevent a danger to the officers and other road users, he was shot “while complying with the tactical requirements,” the police explained. The animal was then picked up by the owner and sent for “proper recycling”.
