The United Nations needs significantly more money to combat the suffering in Sudan. They have asked donor countries in Geneva for a total of $4.1 billion to help millions of people in the country as well as more than 1.5 million refugees and host countries in the region. The aid is coordinated by the UN emergency relief office OCHA and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Last year the sum was 2.6 billion dollars (2.4 billion euros). However, only around 43 percent of these came together.
In the North African country, at least eight million people are internally displaced after fighting broke out between government troops and militias in April 2023. Chaos and destruction mean that almost 18 million people no longer have enough to eat, either now or in the near future. Health care has collapsed and millions of children can no longer go to school, the organizations reported.
