As the end of winter approaches, the waves of respiratory infections in Germany are slowly leveling off. The number of flu cases is falling, and there are also signs of a decline in the number of RSV cases, according to the report from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Wednesday evening. This applies to the week ending February 25th.
RSV stands for respiratory syncytial virus, which has been diagnosed particularly in young children. According to the RKI, the flu still affects all age groups and is leading to an increased number of doctor visits and hospital admissions.
Curve goes slightly downwards
Overall, experts estimate that there were 5.3 million acute respiratory illnesses in the population last week, regardless of whether a doctor was visited. This means that the curve is going slightly downwards compared to previous weeks.
Almost 177,000 laboratory-confirmed cases have been officially reported during the flu season since October, as the report shows. Around 18,000 of these occurred last week, and the trend is falling. Last week there were around 2,300 detections of Sars-CoV-2 (a total of around 324,000 since October).
