SpVgg Greuther Fürth has suffered a severe setback and missed the chance to get very close to the promotion places in the 2nd Bundesliga. Six days after the 2-1 win in the Franconian derby against 1. FC Nürnberg, coach Alexander Zorniger’s team, which was weak this time, also deservedly lost 0-4 (0-1) at Karlsruher SC on Saturday and slipped down in place five and are still three points behind the relegation place. If third-placed Hamburger SV were to win against Osnabrück on Sunday, the gap would increase.

Igor Matanovic and substitute Fabian Schleusener each led the strong KSC to success with a brace in front of 26,043 spectators in the Wildpark. Matanovic scored in the 42nd and 78th minutes, Schleusener increased the score to 4-0 shortly before the end (86th, 90th). Marvin Wanitzek (54th) missed a penalty kick from the hosts after the break.

Karlsruhe, which recently lost only one of twelve games, dominated the game for long periods. The result was the lead by Matanovic, who headed in 1-0 after brilliant preparatory work from Wanitzek. Greuther Fürth appeared too passive and made too many mistakes.

After the break, Karlsruhe continued to be the better team, the guests remained largely harmless apart from a goal chance from Armindo Sieb (65th). Matanovic made it 2-0 after Wanitzek put the penalty next to the goal. Schleusener added two goals in the final phase.
