Airline passengers can breathe a sigh of relief: Lufthansa ground staff ended their warning strike on Saturday with their shift starting at 7:10 a.m., as a company spokesman said upon request. The union had called on around 25,000 employees to stop work since Wednesday evening.
The departure boards at the Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt and Munich still contained a few flight cancellations on Saturday morning. Operations should be gradually ramped up again throughout the day, said the company spokesman. Due to the effects of the strike, there could still be isolated delays and flight cancellations throughout the day. Passengers are asked to regularly check the status of their planned flight via the website or app.
Only 10 to 20 percent of the flights could take place
Around 1,000 flights were canceled on Thursday and Friday, and only 10 to 20 percent of the originally planned flights could take place. The additional warning strike by aviation security forces in Hamburg and Frankfurt ended on Thursday. It meant that no passengers could board at these two airports.
In addition to an inflation compensation bonus of 3,000 euros, Verdi is demanding salary increases of 12.5 percent for a period of twelve months for the ground staff. The next round of negotiations is scheduled to begin next Wednesday.
