The Spanish survival thriller “The Snow Company” is probably missing its chance to become the streaming service Netflix’s most popular non-English language film ever. Last week it only gained around 1.2 million views and is now still around 6 million views behind the Norwegian monster film “Troll” from 2022, for which Netflix reports 103 million views in the first 91 days. “Die Schneegesellschaft” (international title: “Society of the Snow”) has been viewed around 96.9 million times in around 80 days (from its publication on January 4th to last Sunday, March 24th). Closing the gap or overtaking “Troll” will be very unlikely by April 4th.
The two and a half hour thriller “The Snow Company” by director Juan Antonio Bayona (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”) is about the events after a plane crash in the Andes in 1972. In the cold, the survivors begin to eat from the corpses preserved in ice.
Netflix has four top 10 lists for different categories (for “film” in English/non-English and for “TV” – meaning series – in English/non-English). They are based on views in the first 91 days. The international streaming service does not reveal other longer-term viewing figures.
The number of views cannot be entirely equated with the number of viewers. The number of views is a calculated quantity that, according to Netflix, is calculated by dividing the hours watched by the running time of the respective production.
