In her new film, pop star Selena Gomez has a sexually charged phone call with a lover – but she believes that the fact that the scene works is not thanks to her, but to the script. “I don’t know if I’m sexy,” said the 31-year-old in reference to the scene in Cannes. “That’s the script, that’s definitely not me. It was really a very powerful moment in the film and very poetic.” In the scene, Gomez says on the phone in Spanish that her vulva hurts when she thinks about her lover.
The musician and actress is part of the competition film “Emilia Pérez” by Jacques Audiard, which premiered at the film festival on Saturday. The work, which also stars Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldana, tells of a Mexican cartel boss named Manitas who secretly has his gender changed to female. The lawyer Rita (Saldana) organizes the whole thing in the utmost secrecy. The film is a crime thriller, drama and musical at the same time.
The work was very well received by the audience. After the premiere there was long applause, the film team was visibly moved and some were in tears. On the red carpet, Gomez turned heads in an elegant black and white dress with a diamond necklace. Gomez plays Manitas’ wife Jessi, who has no idea about the gender reassignment and is taken to Switzerland with her children after her husband’s staged death.
