A fishing cutter caught fire about 13 kilometers west of Büsum (Dithmarschen district). The crew, consisting of two men, were surprised by the fire early on Friday morning while they were sleeping and were able to get themselves to safety on a life raft just in time, said the Havariekommando and the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons (DGzRS). The fishermen were unharmed. A sea rescue cruiser brought the two ashore, where they were treated by the rescue service.
The firefighting continued in the morning. A helicopter brought firefighters to a sea rescue cruiser near the 18-meter-long burning ship. According to the information, two other emergency ships were on site. According to the CCME, an aircraft flew over the cutter to ensure that no pollutants have escaped so far. The cause of the fire was still unclear.
