Suds Jain, a candidate for re-election from District 5 for the Santa Clara City Council, is deeply committed to addressing the challenges faced by the city. Born in Delhi in 1961 and raised in California, Jain is passionate about climate change and education. After retiring from a tech career in 2008, he immersed himself in civic life in Santa Clara.
Jain believes that some of Santa Clara’s most pressing issues include crumbling infrastructure, housing shortages, and the city’s carbon footprint. He has been actively involved in initiatives to address these challenges, such as proposing a homeless task force, advocating for supportive housing, and pushing for the construction of more housing near the train station where BART will arrive.
As Jain seeks a second term on the City Council, he is determined to continue his work on projects that he initiated during his first term. These include overseeing the Silicon Valley BART Extension, addressing homelessness and affordable housing, promoting environmental sustainability, and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
One of the major challenges facing Santa Clara is its deteriorating infrastructure, with facilities like the International Swim Center in need of renovation. Additionally, the city must work towards reducing its carbon footprint and increasing affordable housing to alleviate traffic congestion caused by commuters.
Despite some disagreements among council members, Jain believes that the council has been successful in passing budgets and making key decisions for the city. He dismisses the recent reports criticizing the council’s functionality as politically motivated and biased, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and professionalism in governance.
Jain’s experience serving on the Planning Commission and the City Council, along with his background in both the private and public sectors, make him uniquely qualified for the role. He is dedicated to continuing his efforts to improve Santa Clara and address the needs of its residents.
