Defending champion Iga Swiatek from Poland has reached the second round at the US Open in a rush. The 22-year-old didn’t give Swede Rebecca Peterson a chance in a 6-0, 6-1 win at the start of the tournament.

After only 58 minutes, the world number one converted her second match point. Swiatek wants to perfect her fifth Grand Slam title win on hard court in New York.

According to data service provider Opta, she is the first player in more than 30 years to win more than 40 sets to zero in two years. Steffi Graf and Monica Seles were the last to do this.

Sakkari fails again in round one

The first top player failed right at the start. Greek world no. 1 Maria Sakkari lost to Spain’s Rebeka Masarova 4-6, 4-6. It was the third first-round loss for Sakkari in a Grand Slam tournament in a row.
