Two people died in a serious accident on federal highway 217 in Ronnenberg near Hanover. Seven other people were injured in the head-on collision on Wednesday evening, some of them life-threateningly, the police said on Thursday. The reason for the accident is a young driver who got into the oncoming lane with his car for reasons that are still unclear. The young man suffered life-threatening injuries, and according to the police, his identity could not be clarified at first.

According to the first findings of the traffic accident service, the young man was driving his car with four occupants in the direction of Hanover. Between Ronnenberg and Weetzen, the car got into the oncoming lane. The 43-year-old driver of an oncoming SUV with five occupants tried to dodge, but the two cars rammed into each other at high speed.

In the collision, a 17-year-old from the young man’s car died at the scene of the accident, and an 18-year-old died a few hours later in the hospital. Another occupant of the car, a 19-year-old man, suffered life-threatening injuries like the driver.

The 43-year-old was reportedly slightly injured, as was a two-year-old girl. Two women, aged 37 and 73, and a 76-year-old man, who were in the SUV, were taken to nearby hospitals with serious injuries.

A large contingent of rescue workers was deployed because of the many injuries, the police said. Three rescue helicopters flew to the scene of the accident and took the injured to hospitals. The highway remained closed after the accident until the early hours of the morning.
