With the expiry of the nine-euro ticket, normal operations have returned to the trains on the German railway network. During the months of June up to and including August, on average, 44 percent more longer train journeys were recorded every day than in the same period of the pre-crisis year 2019, as the Federal Statistical Office reported on Thursday. The basis is prepared and anonymized cell phone connection data from the Telefonica network.

The rush was particularly high on the weekends in summer and, thanks to the subsidized tickets, more than doubled (up 105 percent) compared to 2019. During the week, the service provider Teralytics registered almost a quarter (up 24 percent) more train journeys above 30 kilometers in length.

The guests with tickets limited to regional trains and S-Bahn trains would hardly want to go on the very long tour. No significant change was observed here. Average trips between 100 and 300 kilometers were dominant, which increased by 57 percent, as well as distances between 30 and 100 kilometers, which were used 43 percent more often. Journeys of less than 30 kilometers were not recorded via the mobile phone data.

On September 1, user numbers dropped to or just below the 2019 level.
