In connection with attacks by members of the “Last Generation” climate protection group on oil pumping stations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the public prosecutor’s office is investigating several suspects. As a spokesman in Neubrandenburg said on Wednesday, there are twelve procedures. In most cases, two suspects are accused of disrupting public services, damaging property and trespassing.

The cases are said to have occurred in Lindenhof near Demmin and Glantzhof near Strasburg in Western Pomerania-Greifswald since the beginning of 2022. For decades, an oil pipeline has been running there from the oil port in Rostock to Schwedt in Brandenburg, which is supposed to supply the refinery there because of Germany’s oil embargo – instead of the underground Druzhba oil pipeline from Russia.

The suspected activists who reportedly wanted to block the lines include two 66 and 72-year-old men from Bavaria who were caught near Demmin. The accused face a fine or imprisonment of up to five years. The group “Last Generation” was noticed again and again with freeway blockades in Berlin.

The police had increased their controls on “critical infrastructure” after the incidents. A spokeswoman for the police headquarters had explained that the energy and distribution systems would also be checked during patrols. There are several oil and gas pipelines in eastern Germany, including one in Lubmin.
