Mr. Hellriegel, your victory at the Ironman was hard-fought: After crossing the finish line, you first went to the first-aid tent. How do you remember the race? The course of the race was ideal for me. As a quartet we had distanced the strong runners early on, but I was still able to save energy in the group for the marathon. The lead was finally enough for victory. The outside conditions, on the other hand, were bad: unbelievably hot and extremely windy. An atypical combination for Hawaii. At the finish I was dehydrated and couldn’t give a doping test for a long time – I just couldn’t pee. Others fared even worse. Two women collapsed in the last meters so that they had to crawl to the finish.
