The 66th Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place on Monday evening at the Theater du Chatelet in Paris. The event starts at 8:30 p.m. German time.
A whole series of awards are given to the best players in the world, most notably the Ballon d’Or. France Football will also announce the Ballon d’Or Féminin, as well as the winners of the Kopa Trophy (for best player under 21) and the Yashin Trophy (for best goalkeeper).
Karim Benzema is the favorite for the men’s Ballon d’Or, while Barcelona playmaker Alexia Putellas could be awarded the Ballon d’Or Féminin for the second straight year. For the first time, the award will be based on a season’s performances – rather than a calendar year – as this year’s ceremony was postponed due to the upcoming World Cup.
Cristiano Ronaldo, nominated for the 18th consecutive year, finished 20th in the 2022 vote – disappointing for his exceptionally high standards. But better than his longtime adversary Lionel Messi, who didn’t even make the shortlist of the top 30 players.
The winner of the Ballon d’Or will be announced late Monday evening but the rankings have already been published on France Football’s official Twitter account.
