Despite sharp price increases, the hospitality industry in Germany has not yet reached the sales level of the pre-Corona period. In September, price-adjusted sales fell by 7.6 percent compared to September 2019, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. Measured against the same month last year, sales increased by 14.4 percent in real terms, with a nominal increase of a good quarter (plus 25.5 percent).

“The strong price increases for food and energy also had an impact on prices in the hospitality industry in September,” said the Wiesbaden authority. Compared to the previous month of August, price-adjusted sales fell slightly by 0.9 percent.

Within the hospitality sector, hotels and other accommodation establishments performed better than restaurants in September. In hotels and the like, sales rose by a good 18 percent in real terms compared to the same month last year and also exceeded the pre-crisis level (plus 2.2 percent). In gastronomy, sales grew by 13 percent compared to the same month last year, but remained 10 percent below the level of September 2019.
