The Spanish national team is getting a new coach. Luis Enrique is no longer in charge of La Furia Roja!

Spain was actually considered one of the favorites for the title at the World Cup in Qatar – and indeed the start with the 7-0 win against Costa Rica went perfectly. This was followed by a solid 1-1 draw against Germany before the Spanish disaster took its course.

Because the Spaniards had probably flirted with second place in the group in order to avoid the overwhelming Brazilians in the knockout round, the Iberians took it easy in the last group game against Japan and lost 1:2. Advancement was secured – and that as second, where they met the Moroccans, who were supposedly easy to beat, in the round of 16.

But the North Africans proved to be a tough opponent and devotedly and passionately put up a fierce resistance to Spain. Enrique’s men couldn’t get through and Morocco finally saved themselves on penalties. There, the Spaniards gave out nerves, so that the favorite had to say goodbye in the round of 16.

Unlike the DFB team, where Hansi Flick continues to have confidence, the national coach has to resign for the Spaniards. The Spanish FA confirmed that Luis Enrique has to leave and instead “a new project for the Spanish national football team should be tackled”. But they want to build on the development under Enrique.

It is not yet clear who will be the new national coach of the Spaniards. Rafa Benitez, Roberto Martinez and Luis de la Fuente are currently being discussed in the Spanish media.

Enrique, who had previously coached FC Barcelona, took over the national team in November 2019 and, among other things, reached the semi-finals of last year’s European Championship. In addition, he managed to qualify with his team for two of the three final rounds of the UEFA Nations League.
