IOC President Thomas Bach would support Germany’s bid to host the Olympic Games. “I have never made a secret of the fact that I would welcome it if there was interest in Germany,” said Bach on Monday evening at a panel discussion in Stuttgart.
However, there are guidelines from the International Olympic Committee, the 68-year-old said: “The German Olympic Sports Confederation must agree to make an active and positive contribution. Fans and athletes from other countries should feel welcome and not the feeling want to teach them lessons.” It is also important for a successful application to hold the games as sustainably as possible and to use existing sports facilities for the most part.
The 2024 Summer Games will be held in Paris. Four years later Los Angeles won the contract, in 2032 it is Brisbane. “For the summer games in 2036 and 2040 there are already interested parties in the double-digit range,” said Bach. “It would be a unique experience for German athletes, but the DOSB must prepare for the fact that the competition is strong.”
The hosting of the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo is also certain. Just last week, the IOC postponed the allocation of the 2030 Winter Games. The reasons given were climate change and the associated challenges for winter sports.
